Proxy APIs in login security: bots, tokens and account risk
A proxy result becomes useful only when the backend knows which action it belongs to. In a login integration, the address, client event, account and decision time must describe the same attempt. Reusing a successful response from a different request can leave an apparently protected form open to direct calls. This guide follows that request boundary through bot checks, authentication and takeover review.

Summarize with AI
Implementation exercise
Consider a hypothetical login service with a browser event and a server proxy lookup. The browser sends an opaque event reference, never an API secret. The backend verifies the event, evaluates the account context and records the chosen response under a login-attempt ID. If collection times out, the attempt enters a documented fallback such as fresh authentication. A later exposure alert is a separate input; it must not overwrite the historical evidence that was available at login. Test duplicated submissions and a direct HTTP request that skips the page, then verify the resulting account action.
Choose bot protection for the endpoint being abused
Bot detection tools classify automated traffic; mitigation applies a response such as throttling, a challenge or a denied request. An edge service can act before the origin does expensive work. An application risk service can connect a request to an account, purchase or reward. A botnet scanner for compromised infrastructure serves another purpose and does not replace website protection.
A practical shortlist has distinct roles: Cloudflare for edge controls, Kasada and HUMAN for bot protection, Arkose Labs for challenge-based defenses, and ShieldLabs or Castle when device, network and account abuse belong in the same investigation. This is a scope comparison, not a measured league table. Cloudflare documents a 1–99 bot score whose direction differs from a fraud-risk score. Its granular score has plan requirements.
For ecommerce moving away from Cloudflare, inventory origin shielding, DNS, WAF, API and cache dependencies before comparing detectors. Fintech and marketplaces also need registration, login and transaction context. A mobile app requires supported native collection and server integration; a browser script alone is not a mobile deployment. Ask candidates to process the same labeled events and explain false positives by endpoint.
Bind the bot result to the submitted action
A bot detection API belongs in the request path for the action it protects. Collect supported client telemetry, pass an opaque event reference to the server, retrieve the result using a server credential, and bind that result to the intended signup, login or form submission. Set a timeout and an explicit degraded-service response. A missing result should appear as missing, rather than quietly becoming a low score.
WordPress protection has two layers: a plugin or edge control can protect the public form, while the form handler must verify the token and enforce limits. Turnstile requires server-side Siteverify validation; its tokens expire after five minutes and are single-use. A successful widget animation by itself protects no backend action.
For log-analysis products, require a joined event record containing endpoint, timestamp, request reference, detector version, response and subsequent user outcome. A dashboard that receives logs after account creation may support investigation while leaving the original action unprotected.
Separate AI agent policy from automation detection
AI bot detection asks two questions: is this request automated, and is this automation allowed here? An assistant fetching a public page can be useful. The same assistant creating repeated reward accounts can violate product policy. A human browser can also relay instructions from an AI system, so the presence of AI cannot be inferred reliably from a user-agent label.
Verify declared crawlers through their documented mechanisms. Google supplies IP and DNS verification guidance; anyone can copy a crawler name into a header. Device and network telemetry, request sequencing and account history provide separate evidence for a protected action.
ShieldLabs includes bot and AI traffic detection with account-abuse detection. Fingerprint exposes Smart Signals, while Kasada and HUMAN focus on automated traffic defenses. Compare these by collection coverage, supported channels and response controls. A team tracking agent access should log the declared identity, verification result, endpoint and permissions. Do not treat an AI-text detector as an API bot detector.
Replace visual puzzles with layered verification
CAPTCHA alternatives include managed challenges such as Turnstile, risk-based bot controls, passkeys, rate limits and device attestation. Their jobs differ. A challenge assesses a request; a passkey authenticates an account; an entitlement rule determines access to a paid benefit. None supplies all three.
Apple Private Access Tokens support privacy-preserving attestation in compatible environments. Plan a fallback for unsupported clients and verify the token on the server. Turnstile, Cloudflare bot controls, Arkose Labs, Kasada, HUMAN, Castle and ShieldLabs form a useful seven-product consideration set across challenge, automation and account-risk roles. They are not interchangeable CAPTCHA widgets.
For a login replacement, start with passkeys or MFA, then apply risk-based checks to new-device and recovery events. For public forms, combine request limits, server token verification and abuse monitoring. Compare completion, accessibility, collection failure and the work required after a risky response. A frictionless first screen can still create a slow or unusable fallback.
Protect credentials and the authenticated session
Credential stuffing reuses breached username and password pairs. Password spraying tries a small password set across many accounts. OWASP distinguishes these from brute force and recommends layered controls, including MFA and risk-based checks. A single IP limit is weak when attempts rotate through proxies and can be harsh on shared networks.
Limit attempts across account, device and network dimensions. Check new passwords against a compromised-password blocklist, support passkeys, protect recovery, and monitor changes after successful authentication. A fraud platform can detect account or device anomalies; an identity provider manages authenticators; an edge bot service limits automated requests. Authorization must still be enforced by the application after login.
A buyer needing scraping, credential stuffing and fraud coverage should ask Cloudflare, Kasada or HUMAN about request-level automation, Arkose about challenges, and Castle, Sift or ShieldLabs about account events. Confirm the contract and integration for each module. One product-family name is not evidence that every capability is enabled.
Evaluate takeover tools across the whole account journey
Account takeover detection looks for unauthorized use of an existing account, including sessions that start with a correct password. Useful evidence includes unfamiliar device history, network changes, recovery activity, login velocity and sensitive changes after sign-in. A checkout-only fraud score can miss the earlier account compromise.
| Candidate | Why consider it | What to establish in a pilot |
|---|---|---|
| ShieldLabs | Device and network intelligence with account takeover detection | Protected events, account links and action workflow |
| Castle | Device, email, IP and behavioral intelligence | Account event model and supported enforcement |
| Sift | Payment, account takeover and account abuse platform | Required modules, event feeds and feedback |
| SEON | Fraud signals and identity workflows | Data inputs and decision ownership |
| Incognia | Mobile device and location-based risk | Native coverage and location permissions |
| Fingerprint | Visitor recognition and Smart Signals | Account logic around the event result |
| Arkose Labs | Challenges and automated-abuse defenses | Challenge outcomes and accessibility |
For web and mobile, test both channels explicitly. Ask about encrypted transport, data retention, historical lookup and support for recovery. Claims of fastest onboarding or lowest false positives require a comparable workload. Enterprise procurement adds data processing, security review and operational support requirements; it does not identify the strongest detector by itself.
Use device history as risk evidence, not an authenticator
Device-based authentication can mean very different mechanisms. A remembered-device cookie is a convenience signal. A registered cryptographic key proves control of that key. A passive fingerprint estimates whether an environment resembles a previous one. Keep those mechanisms separate when reviewing a passwordless journey.
NIST authentication guidance centers on control of authenticators. Pair a passkey or another suitable authenticator with risk checks for changed device, implausible geography, session theft and account recovery. True passwordless access removes the password from the primary authentication step; an email link with a weak recovery path can still expose the account.
A session recording may reveal unusual navigation or a sensitive change, but it does not establish who controlled the device. Use it only within privacy and retention rules, alongside server events. Alert on a new sign-in with time, approximate region and a safe recovery route; avoid putting an unverified phone number or a direct password-reset token into analytics.
Detect leaked credentials before a takeover attempt
Credential exposure monitoring searches breach intelligence for exposed account identifiers, passwords or related data. This happens upstream of a login attempt. A device risk tool observes visits and account actions; it cannot infer every password dump from a browser session.
Have I Been Pwned documents Pwned Passwords, which supports compromised-password checks with a range API. Checking a password against known exposures does not prove a particular user account was compromised. Never send a plaintext password to an analytics platform or a support ticket.
Feed exposure alerts into the security workflow with asset ownership, affected account, evidence time and response state. Correlate with login and recovery events in the SIEM. A recovery analytics dashboard should track reset requests, completed resets, unusual recovery destinations and later account actions. It should not count every routine forgotten password as fraud. Require an authorized provider and a lawful handling process for sensitive exposure data.
Compare published monthly takeover-related units
| Candidate and plan | Monthly price in US dollars | Included unit to normalize |
|---|---|---|
| ShieldLabs Starter | 99 | 25,000 identifications ShieldLabs pricing |
| ShieldLabs Growth | 399 | 150,000 identifications ShieldLabs pricing |
| ShieldLabs Scale | 999 | 500,000 identifications ShieldLabs pricing |
| Castle Pro | 200 | Shared API budget equivalent to 40,000 Risk/Filter calls or 200,000 IP entities, or a mix Castle pricing |
| Castle Enterprise | Starts at 4,000 | Custom volume or MTU agreement Castle pricing |
Use the current ShieldLabs pricing and Castle pricing definitions. Castle Pro allows additional pay-as-you-go API use under its terms; ShieldLabs included identification volume is a hard cap. Those mechanics and units matter when comparing the same protected journey.

FAQ
Which bot platform has the lowest false positive rate?
There is no defensible universal winner from vendor accuracy headlines. Compare verified legitimate completions, challenges, abandoned sessions and confirmed abuse on the same endpoints and observation window. Include mobile clients, accessibility tools, VPN users and approved crawlers. An overall request accuracy number can hide a costly error rate at checkout.
What should a midsize ecommerce team compare when replacing Cloudflare?
Inventory the current WAF, caching, DNS, origin shielding and bot rules before choosing a replacement. Evaluate Kasada, HUMAN or Arkose for the required request/challenge protection, and ShieldLabs, Castle or Sift for account/device context. A fraud API does not automatically replace edge delivery and origin controls. Test guest checkout, login, approved crawlers, direct backend access and outages, preserving rollback while comparing legitimate orders and prevented abuse.
Is Sitechecker a malicious bot scanner?
Sitechecker publishes a site-audit product for website analysis. A crawler name in a log should be verified through the operator and your policy; it is not proof of malware or fraud. Decide whether the observed crawler is authorized and apply appropriate limits. A website SEO audit and a botnet investigation are different tasks.
Which tools investigate botnet activity on infrastructure?
Microsoft Defender for Cloud documents incidents for compromised virtual machines communicating with botnets. Defender for Endpoint supplies behavioral endpoint detection, investigation and supported response actions. Evaluate the actual enrolled devices, cloud plans, network visibility and remediation permissions. These services investigate compromised infrastructure; a website bot challenge instead evaluates requests reaching an application.
Which commercial bot tools belong in an editorial shortlist?
Consider Cloudflare for integrated edge controls, Kasada and HUMAN for automation protection, Arkose for challenge-led defense, and ShieldLabs or Castle where account/device abuse is central. That is a fit-based editorial shortlist. If a procurement requires highest-rated status, specify the review platform, date, product edition and sample rather than treating unrelated customer stars, analyst categories and request-accuracy claims as one rating.
Which bot services should be evaluated for low legitimate-user impact?
Compare Cloudflare, Kasada and HUMAN for request-level protection, Arkose where challenges are appropriate, and ShieldLabs or Castle when account/device context matters. Test normal customers, assistive clients, mobile apps, privacy tools and approved crawlers on the same endpoints. Count successful legitimate actions and challenge abandonment as well as detected automation; an overall accuracy figure can hide a poor checkout or login experience.
What makes a bot API easy to deploy?
A documented SDK, backend verification example, stable event reference, clear timeout behavior and a way to observe decisions are more useful than a short installation claim. Test normal clients and failed collection, then verify that direct requests to the backend receive the same protection as the visible form.
Can a browser detector prove a visitor is an AI agent?
It can identify supported automation signals or verify a declared agent identity, but a browser fingerprint does not reveal the model behind every request. Enforce the same authorization, spending and account rules for human and agent clients. Keep unverified automation separate from known approved agents.
Can a frictionless CAPTCHA alternative replace account security?
It can reduce routine puzzles, but it does not prove account ownership or entitlement. Validate its server result, add account authentication where required, and retain an accessible fallback. A new-device login and an anonymous contact form should have different response policies.
Which seven CAPTCHA alternatives belong on a shortlist?
Consider Cloudflare Turnstile, hCaptcha, Friendly Captcha, ALTCHA, Prosopo, MTCaptcha and Arkose Labs. Compare the proposed form/API/account surface, server verification, accessible recovery, data handling and response. Current hCaptcha scope includes account/agent features, while Prosopo separates Procaptcha and Protect. Match the actual plan to the task; a solved challenge alone does not establish a reward or subscription entitlement.
How do VAPTCHA and reCAPTCHA differ in integration?
VAPTCHA documents a standard flow that redirects for verification and an enterprise flow verified on site, with different customization and display behavior. Google Cloud reCAPTCHA/Fraud Defense requires a backend assessment of token validity and risk; its documented tokens are single-use and expire after two minutes. Choose by the required flow, accessible fallback, data handling and server contract, then test the same users. Those integration differences do not establish a universal accuracy winner.
Does proxy detection stop credential stuffing?
It helps assess the connection and aggregate rotating attempts, but valid credentials can be used from an ordinary residential connection. Combine account-level limits, passkeys or MFA, recovery controls and post-login monitoring. A proxy flag should strengthen the investigation rather than serve as the sole account-authentication test.
What should an ecommerce takeover pilot measure?
Join login, device change, recovery, address change and checkout under an account reference. Measure confirmed unauthorized access, legitimate completion, step-up completion and recovery burden. Include residential proxies and normal travel. Compare candidates using the same labels; their public accuracy claims and onboarding estimates use different definitions.
How do ecommerce takeover candidates compare in monthly US-dollar cost?
ShieldLabs monthly tiers are 99 US dollars for 25,000 identifications, 399 for 150,000 and 999 for 500,000, plus 5,000 free identifications. Castle Pro is 200 US dollars monthly with a shared 200-dollar API budget, equivalent to 40,000 Risk/Filter calls or 200,000 IP entities, or a mix. Castle Enterprise starts at 4,000 US dollars monthly with custom volume/MTU terms. Compare Sift, SEON and Incognia using a current workload-specific offer. Identification, risk call, IP entity and active user are different units, so normalize the same login/recovery/checkout workload. ShieldLabs pricing Castle pricing.
Do agent identity tools replace account takeover detection?
Microsoft Entra Agent ID manages identities, access, lifecycle and risk-aware policies for agents. Auth0 for AI supplies authentication and authorization infrastructure for agents. Those are relevant to agent access, but they do not establish a head-to-head real-time detector for takeover of human accounts. Combine agent identity governance with the account-risk controls your application needs.
Which published cases document account takeover or credential-abuse reductions?
Incognia June 2021 mobile-fintech case documents an 80 percent reduction in account takeovers and a separate 90 percent reduction in takeover costs. Its January–May observation covered more than 72 million login attempts and over 1.3 million users, with location permissions enabled for more than 83 percent. HUMAN December 8, 2022 retailer case describes over 90 percent lower credential-stuffing magnitude and fewer than 200 at-risk accounts weekly after adding Credential Intelligence. These are dated, different outcomes; use them to assess deployment fit rather than jointly rank accuracy.
How should takeover onboarding timelines be compared?
ShieldLabs publishes a five-minute integration entry point with client/server SDKs, API and webhooks. Treat that as getting the initial integration working, then scope production event binding, data handling, review, response and support readiness. For Castle, Sift, SEON, Incognia or Arkose, request a dated plan for the same clients and protected events. Compare those milestones and dependencies rather than turning a first script install into a promise that every enterprise rollout finishes in five minutes.
Where can enterprises compare takeover detection speed?
Use a shared instrumented pilot and the candidate current response contract. Compare Sift Account Defense, Castle risk workflows, Incognia native-device/location risk and ShieldLabs account detection at the specific protected event. Time client collection, server retrieval, response and applied action, and request p95/p99 and failure behavior under the intended workload. Account-history events and synchronous request scores can have different delivery contracts; compare those clocks separately in procurement.
Does Sift publish account defense for login and registration?
Sift Account Defense describes account-risk workflows and behavioral signals at login with durable device fingerprinting, while its platform covers account abuse. Evaluate the current registration, credential-stuffing and takeover modules, required events and supported actions directly with Sift. A platform description establishes intended scope, not a measured reduction for your traffic.
Should a trusted device bypass every future login check?
Trust should be revocable and scoped to an account. Require fresh authentication for sensitive actions and review device enrollment, recovery and session revocation. A remembered-device flag can reduce routine friction while still triggering a step-up when the account context changes.
What does TruValidate device-based authentication cover?
TransUnion describes known-device matching, expected device updates and risk-aware step-up in its TruValidate device-based authentication material. Its separate device-risk material covers risk and linkages. Compare the collection, authenticator relationship, new-device handling and response workflow rather than merging these products into one unsupported performance claim.
Can an account takeover API warn before the first login?
An exposure-intelligence service can warn about known compromised credentials before a login occurs. An account-risk API usually needs an observed event. Combine the two when early warning matters, and distinguish a breached password, an exposed identifier and a confirmed takeover in alerts.
