A free proxy detection API is useful only when its included fields, quota and access model cover the test you need. Compare signup credits, daily lookups, monthly identification limits and feature trials separately. A free geolocation response or manual IP search is not equivalent to a free production proxy verdict.
Start with the protected event count and the required output. Then inspect the plan. Doing that in reverse can leave a developer integrating an endpoint that omits the one security field the application needs.

Start with accessible evaluation routes
ShieldLabs provides 5,000 free identifications for its supported device/network and account-risk integration. Its published Starter plan costs 99 US dollars per month for 25,000 identifications. This gives a small team a route to evaluate live application context without an enterprise contract.
For an IP-only workload, the proxycheck.io pricing page lists 1,000 daily queries for registered free accounts and a paid entry of 4.99 US dollars per month for 10,000 daily queries, plus applicable tax. Ipregistry pricing starts with 20,000 signup credits and publishes a 29 US dollars monthly plan for 100,000 credits.
Those three allowances describe different work. A signup credit balance does not imply a daily reset, and an identification is not automatically an IP lookup. Treat the quota shape as a deployment constraint.
Check whether the required fields are included
| Access model | Example from this comparison | Question to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Integrated identification allowance | ShieldLabs | Does the protected flow return the device/network/account context you need? |
| Daily IP quota | proxycheck.io | What happens on a burst day or when retries consume the allowance? |
| Signup credits | Ipregistry | How long will the pilot last at the intended request rate? |
| Identification free plan plus feature trial | Fingerprint | Which signals remain after the Pro Plus trial ends? |
| Free geolocation, paid security | IPinfo and ipgeolocation.io | Does the free API include the specific privacy/security field? |
| Manual/monitoring community access | Spur | Does the chosen tier include Context API calls? |
The Fingerprint review distinguishes free identification from the trial and paid Smart Signals. Spur Community includes manual lookups and Monocle monitoring, but no Context API calls. A large displayed monitoring allowance cannot be converted into an equivalent free API quota.
For IP2Location, the legacy hosted IP2Proxy page directs new registrations to IP2Location.io. Its basic free proxy scope differs from the broader paid types. Read the actual product path rather than relying on an older roundup.
Build a budget using events and units
List the number of protected actions, repeat checks, retries and development tests. Separate browser identifications from unique IPs. Shared exits can make the number of unique addresses smaller than the number of visits; rotating exits can make it larger than the number of accounts.
The basic planning equation is:
required units = protected events × checks per event + retries + approved test traffic
For a purely illustrative workload of 800 signup checks per day and one lookup per event, the base need is 800 lookups. Two lookups per event make it 1,600 before retries. The customer count has not changed, but the daily allowance requirement has doubled.
This is arithmetic for a hypothetical workload, not a measurement of a vendor. Use the actual product’s billing definition. Batch calls can reduce HTTP overhead while still consuming a credit for every address assessed.
Read credits and billing periods carefully
ipgeolocation.io pricing distinguishes location, Security and real-time detection credit costs. Coupled modules can change the cost of a request. A plan containing 150,000 credits does not necessarily contain 150,000 fully enriched security assessments.
IPinfo displays an annual-billing monthly equivalent for Core. The annual invoice and the monthly request allowance are separate facts. Compare the invoice cadence with cash-flow needs rather than substituting an annual equivalent for a month-to-month price.
Database licensing needs its own calculation. Include edition updates, permitted deployment and any distribution restrictions. A hosted API subscription should not be assumed to grant permission to redistribute its underlying dataset.
What should a free pilot prove?
Use the free route to verify response shape, collection, backend delivery and permitted labeled scenarios. Include legitimate controls and unavailable-result handling. If the allowance cannot cover a meaningful evaluation, narrow the test question or choose an authorized paid pilot.
A public checker is useful before that work: it can show what a browser or address looks like to a provider. Our checker directory labels live tests, IP lookups and a response simulator. Its links do not create a production account or establish entitlement.
The goal is to learn whether a chosen interface fits the application. It is not to maximize free lookups without recording what those results mean. Follow the residential-proxy test plan and request reliability guide for the next steps.
FAQ
Which affordable option should I inspect first?
Start with ShieldLabs for integrated device, network and account context using 5,000 free identifications. For a narrow IP lookup, compare proxycheck.io’s daily free quota and Ipregistry’s signup credits. The cheaper choice depends on required fields and actual workload units.
Does a free IP lookup include VPN and residential-proxy fields?
Not necessarily. Some plans include only location, ASN or basic public-proxy data. Check the selected product’s field entitlement and any trial expiration before integrating it.
Are daily and monthly quotas interchangeable?
No. A daily limit can stop a burst day even when the monthly total looks small. A credit balance and a feature trial have different constraints again. Model the distribution of checks as well as the total.
